REM’s (Weighted) Walnut Wattles™ Storm Water Filter BMP
The Weighted Walnut Wattle™ is a Patent Design developed to reduce pollutants delivered by urban water runoff to oceans, bays, beaches, streams, wetlands and other waterways. The Weighted Walnut Wattle have multiple applications for commercial property owners, industrial operators, municipal employees, construction personnel and homeowners.
The Weighted Walnut Wattle™ is an effective and economical “Best Management Practice” (BMP) component in an organization’s “Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan” (SWPPP).
REM’s (Weighted) Walnut Wattles™
The Weight Walnut Wattle™ is engineered for efficient filtration and durability in difficult environments. The unique Walnut Wattle housing contains a natural, 100% biodegradable filter media. The design allows for the collection of sediment, debris, and other pollutants from runoff water in two ways: First, the filter slows the speed of the runoff water creating a ponding or dam effect. When runoff water is slowed by ponding, suspended solids sink to the bottom of the pond for collection after the flow event. Secondly, the walnut media and the Wattle housing provide a sieve filter affect.
The Wattle housing is manufactured using a state-of-the-art weaving technology, which provides a rugged fabric with unique water flow and filtration characteristics (See fig 1.). Contained within the housing is a 100 percent biodegradable filtration media. The media consists of randomly shaped walnut shells (See fig 2.). When compacted together walnut shell has excellent filtration characteristics. The random shapes and larger surface area provide millions of entrapment zones for containment of suspended solids such as sediment and debris.
An additional benefit of using walnut shell is the relatively low environmental impact at disposal versus filter media made from synthetic materials.
Walnut shell is dense material that maintains shape and structural integrity. The density provides significant weight allowing the Wattle to stay in place while avoiding floating during flow events. Walnut shell resists the absorption of moisture resulting in reduced natural decay and quick drying. Weighted Walnut Wattles weigh approximately 4 to 6lbs. per linear foot.

Fig. 2 Walnut shells are a high density filter media that has excellent filtration characteristics and is quick to dry.

Handles allow personnel a convenient way of moving the Wattle from one location to another. Handles also provide an easy way to team the wattles together and anchoring in place.

REM’s (Weighted) Walnut Wattles™
The Walnut Wattles™ can be placed and physically configured at key locations throughout a site to filter stormwater discharging off the property. Typically wattles are placed at locations on your site where water runs off into the street or into a storm drains and conveyance structures. Weighted Walnut Wattles are flexible and conform to almost any landscape geometry allowing for configuration in multiple shapes – i.e. circular and U shapes. The U-shaped configuration works well when placed up against a street curb. Water flowing down a street along a curb face ponds in the U-shaped filter capturing pollutants. A circular configuration around an area storm drain provides filtration of flow from every direction (360 degrees). REM offers customized sizing to meet the specific client applications.
Once a project has been completed and the protection is no longer needed, the sediment and debris which was captured can be collected and disposed of in accordance with Federal, State and Local Laws. Wattles can be spray washed clean and used on multiple occasions. Remember to wash the wattle in a location where the runoff avoids discharge into the stormwater system.
Note: in order to efficiently filter higher water flow applications or applications with water flow spikes, multiple wattles may be used in series or placed downstream from each other.
REM’s (Weighted) Walnut Wattles™ – Mixed Media Option
The Walnut Wattles™ may be configured with a mix of walnut media and a hydrophobic expanded volcanic ash absorbent media that efficiently encapsulates liquefied petroleum hydrocarbons (Fats, Oils, & Grease – FOG). The (Weighted) Walnut Wattles MIX™ is appropriate for applications with high levels of hydrocarbon loading.
